At the first look, the newest timepiece in the Pontos S Collection does not look much different from the last year’s chronograph edition. However, there is one thing that makes it completely unique and pretty cool, while at the same time seriously enhances the quality of the watch. I am talking about the new material of which a new Maurice Lacroix Pontos S Extreme watch was made; about the brand’s innovative alloy Powerlite ®, composed of aluminum, magnesium, titanium, zirconium and ceramic. This extraordinary timepiece which can also be a very useful diving tool (it is water-resistant up to 200 meters/660 feet) possesses all the qualities of a modern, high-end sport watch – great functionality, toughness and an attractive, masculine look.
Along with a few other novelties from the Pontos S Collection which I have already introduced (ML Pontos S Diver and ML Pontos S Chronographs), the Extreme Chronograph will be officially presented at the upcoming Baselworld 2013 watch fair. Designed by Henrik Fisker, the iconic BMW and Aston Martin designer, this stunning timepiece opens a new field for the prestigious watchmaker, when it comes to the production of high-quality sport models.
The watch comes in the limited edition in three variations, depending on the case color which is black, khaki or blue, all decorated with sandblasted finishes. It is perfectly round and although its diameter of 43mm is not particularly large, it looks pretty robust due to the sizes of a crown and two pushers.
A black satin dial features applied hour markers, three chrono counters, a date window and the application of the brand’s logo. The 12-hour counter is located at the 6 o’clock position, the small seconds sub-dial takes the 9 o’clock position, while the 30-minute counter is located at the 12 o’clock position. At the outer rim, there is a minute scale, framed with an internal rotating unidirectional bezel for counting diving time. The dial is covered by cambered sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides.
Red elements on the black case version make a nice contrast with a dominantly black interface. Thus, the first 15 minutes on the inner rotating bezel are marked with striking red, as well as the upper pusher. The tips of minute and central second hands are also highlighted in the matching color. Finally, there is a decorative red stitching on a black NATO-type nylon strap with a titanium buckle. All these details on blue and khaki versions come in colors that match colors of their cases.
New Maurice Lacroix Pontos S Extreme Chronograph watch is powered by a Swiss Calibre ML112 (Valjoux 7750 base movement). This self-winding mechanism beats up to 46 hour when it is fully wound, at the frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour.
