Precision and style, Omega and James Bond

Being just a great watch is often not good enough and sometimes the manufacturer needs a real star to promote its product. That was exactly the case with the Omega Seamaster, automatic winding chronograph and quartz watch, which has been around since 1947.

For Omega Seamaster that star is none other than the world’s best known spy from the movies, agent 007.

Ever since GoldenEye was released 1995, the choice of James Bond have been Omega Seamaster Professional Diver watches (famous fictional spy wore it in five sequels). GoldenEye marked the first time that well known character had timepiece created by Swiss manufacturer Omega. In that particular movie, he was portrayed by Pierce Brosnan, who wore Omega Seamaster Quartz Professional (model 2541.80.00).

In next three sequels, Bond’s choice was Seamaster Diver 300 M (2531.80.00). Both types of watches are made of stainless steel, have a stainless bracelet, blue dial, unidirectional rotating bezel with blue ring and a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal.

These Seamasters have a diameter of 41 mm and can withstand pressure in depths up to 300 meters.

Omega Seamaster Quartz Professional (model 2541.80.00) is of caliber Omega 1538, has a quartz precision movement with rhodium plated finish, while Seamaster Diver 300 M (2531.80.00) is of caliber Omega 1120 and it’s a self-winding chronometer with rhodium-plated finish.

Craig’s choice

In Casino Royale, the first movie in the series in which  agent 007 was portrayed by latest Bond, Daniel Craig, the characters choice were actually two different watches.

First was Seamaster Diver 300 M (Reference 2220.80.00) with helium escape valve, unidirectional rotating bazel, certified chronometer with screw-in crown. It also has a steel case, blue dial and domed anti-reflective, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal.

Second model in this film was Omega Planet Ocean (2900.50.91). This model has stainless steel case, screw-in crown, helium escape valve, domed scratch-resistent sapphire crystal, blue dial and deployant security clasp. It is of caliber Omega 2500 and has a Co-Axial Escapement movement with rhodium-plated finish.

Swiss watch manufacturer also presented a Limited Series of this model  (Model 2226.80.00), which has a screw-in case with 007 gun logo and that same logo is also featured on second hand. This edition consisted of 10,007 pieces.

Second limited edition was presented in 2006 and it was Seamaster Planet Ocean, similar to one that Craig sported, but it also had some differences. For example, there’s a small orange logo on second hand, engraved caseback and engraved 007 on the clasp. This edition was even more exclusive and consisted of only 5,007 pieces.

Highly water resistant diver’s watches

In latest of all Bond films, released in 2008, agent 007 sported Seamaster Planet Ocean 600 m (2201.50.00) Co-Axial Chronometer  which, unlike previous models, has a black dial. It is Caliber Omega 2500, has a steel case, diameter of 42 mm and can withstand pressure to 600 meters below sea level.

It shows date, has a self-locking crown which is used for highly water resistant diver’s watches, helium escape valve- decompression system which allows helium to escape when this timepiece is worn in pressure chambers, as used for long-term underwater work, crude oil exploration and similar activities. Also, Seamaster Planet Ocean 600 has passed precision test and thus earned a label of chronometer. It is equipped with unidirectional rotating bezel, which is of large significance to divers.
